Advice I Would Give My Younger Self

As my college career is nearing its end, I have had a lot of time to think about the past and reflect. And there are so many things about college I regret. While I firmly believe everything that has happened thus far has happened for a reason and it has made me a better person because of it, if I had the opportunity to go back in time and change things, I would, without a doubt, do things differently. There are so many things I did not know and so many things I was ignorant about. I wish someone had knocked sense into me. You guys might not agree with some of these things, but after being in college for 5+ years and listening to the generic advice you hear from counselors, teachers, and adults, I have realized that not all advice works for everyone and everyone is different.

(FYI: this is a advice to MYSELF. it's obviously not applicable to everyone, so don't feel like you have to agree/disagree with this)

  1. If you are unsure about what career path you want to take, take the time to research and figure out what you like and don't like. What you're good and not good at. Take personality and career tests to get a better of idea of this. And do all this before going to college.
  2. If you're not ready to go to college or don't want to go to college, take some time to figure out what you want to do. Don't just go to college immediately because everyone else is doing it! Most universities go by a semester system, if you're not ready in the fall, go the following spring or summer.
  3. Pray about what you want to do. Make sure it's something that you and God want you to do and it's not something the world is pressuring you into doing.
  4. College is expensive. Like stupid expensive. Contrary to popular belief, if you don't know what you wanna do in college, don't think, "oh I have plenty of time, I can figure it out in college!" you're either going to be stuck in a major you don't like, or you're going to spend more than 4 years in school after changing your major 38297428 times. People will tell you that it's okay to change your major in college and they are right! BUT they don't mention the amount of money you'll have to spend because of it. Or the loans you're going to have to take out. But if you're okay with being in debt, go ahead since you clearly know everything!!! (young sarah, you're not okay with it and you will never be okay with it)
  5. Community college is not for dumb people. I literally don't know why you thought that.
  6. If you don't like where you live (for reasons other than your family bothering you), look into other cities and colleges. You might regret staying.
  7. Talk to recent graduates or people in the majors you are interested in to see how they feel about it. See things from a perspective of someone who is NOT a fully functional adult and who has NOT worked many years in the industry and who does NOT have 10+ degrees and CANNOT see/understand things from your perspective. Because they might be talking from a perspective of someone who never struggled in college and breezed through everything and cannot sympathize with people who are not at the same intelligence level as them.
  8. Don't get distracted by boys! They are not worth the time and energy! Wait till you're done with college for that.
  9. Get involved early in college with campus organizations. Once you're older, it's harder and more awkward to join and you're definitely awkward.
  10. Start saving money at the beginning of college. You will definitely want to have money for bigger expenses after you graduate.
  11. Lots of college students are fake and will use you to their benefit. Be careful of who you become friends with.

  1. Thanks, for sharing this informative post with us. Students need to improve him/her self with many new things when he started a college first time. Involve in college functions to know more about college systems and rules. Again, thanks for this!!

  2. Informative post. Collage matters a lot in an individual life. After the school some students don't want to go collage but are forced to go by their parents. This should not happen. Each student should given some time to figure out what they want to do in their future and when they want to go to collage.
