How to be Fashionable with Little Effort
I've posted some life hacks on here, but I thought it was time to share some of my fashion tips and hacks as well. Some are already floating around on here and on instagram, but I thought it would be helpful for you all to see it all in one place. I am no fashion expert whatsoever, but I did study engineering in college, so I'm all about efficiency, saving money, and making life easier, especially when it comes to fashion. (Well, when I'm not wearing an XL t-shirt and Nike shorts. ๐)
1. Buy basics! "um what, sarah, I don't want to be basic" no no no, I mean buy basic pieces of clothing. Such as plain colored shirts, black jeans, denims, neutral-colored sneakers, etc. These are simple pieces that can be dressed up or down! Like a plain white top can be dressed up with black jeans, heels, and some jewelry. A dress can be dressed down with a denim jacket and converse. Basics are super versatile and can be mixed and matched to create so many outfits without ever breaking the bank.
2. Jackets and Cardigans. Related to what I said earlier. Cardigans and jackets can instantly dress up an outfit. I sometimes put on a leather jacket or denim jacket over a t-shirt just to make people think I put effort into my outfit when I really didn't.
3. Pinterest. I've talked about this in my last life hacks post and I know some people think I am kidding, but I am not. If you have something in your closet that you want to wear but have no clue how to style it, type it in the search bar on Pinterest. For example, you bought some black and white striped pants and don't know what to wear it with? Type in "black and white striped pants outfit" in the search bar and numerous outfit ideas will show up.
4. Styling around one piece of your outfit. Kind of going off on a tangent on what I was talking about earlier, but if you don't know what to wear, pick one piece of clothing that you like, and revolve your outfit around that. I did this a while ago with a blue tank. I really wanted to wear it, so I made sure everything matched that. It saved time getting ready and eliminated so many other choices.
5. Take a picture. And NOT a mirror picture! The mirror lies. Sometimes I do this thing where I wear an outfit, think I look great, but then see pictures later and realized that I looked horrible. Prop your phone somewhere or use your webcam and take a photo using the timer before heading out. You will get a much better idea of whether or not your outfit actually looks good or not.
6. Jewelry and Accessories. In my opinion, hoops automatically makes you look dressed up even if you're wearing a t-shirt. The bigger the better. Jewelry is like the makeup for clothes, enhancing whatever you are wearing! Put on a pair of sunglasses and you'll instantly look like you're the boss.
7. Wear black. You might have heard the saying, "when in doubt, wear black." And y'all, it's such good advice! You automatically look more dressed up wearing black and it's better to look more dressed up than not dressed up at all. Plus it's a flattering color and looks great on everyone!
Hopefully these tips are helpful if you struggle in the fashion department!
